Why NVC Document Uploads Fail on ceac.state.gov
CEAC runs strict server-side checks on PDF structure and byte weight, rejecting editable forms, encrypted transcripts, grayscale scans of color originals, and oversized files.
Form I-864 "Invalid PDF" Errors and the XFA Print-to-PDF Path
NVC rejects modifiable or password-protected PDFs. Standard AcroForm PDFs and IRS transcripts flatten directly here. If your official USCIS I-864 uses Adobe XFA, follow two steps: open it in desktop Adobe Acrobat Reader and choose File → Print → Save as PDF, then drop that saved PDF here to fit under 2 MB.
Why Targeting 2 MB Prevents CEAC Gateway Timeouts
CEAC's Scanning and Uploading Tips page specifies 2 MB (2,097,152 bytes) per file, and larger uploads frequently spin or fail validation. Re-encoding embedded scan images keeps multi-page affidavits and tax returns safely under 2 MB.
Color Scanning and Single-Document Completeness Rules
- Keep color originals in color: NVC instructs applicants to scan color certificates, seals, and passports in color rather than grayscale or black-and-white.
- Include stamped reverse sides and translations: Combine the original civil document, any back-side stamps, and the certified English translation into one single PDF.
- Never upload .zip archives: CEAC blocks compressed archive files; upload each required document category as its own standalone PDF.
